CHAMPAIGN — A Bloomington woman was critically injured in an alleged drunken driving crash on Interstate 74 near Champaign early Saturday.
Illinois State Police at Pesotum said Elizabeth J. Dowell, 39, was driving east on I-74 about 1:15 a.m. when she was unable to avoid striking a deer on the highway.
She swerved to avoid it, lost control of her car, ran off the road and rolled over.
She was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Saturday.
Police said she was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
I felt sorry for this driver until I read that she rec'd a DUI! Thankfully, she did not hit another vehicle. I DO really hope she makes a successful recovery, but hopefully has learned that drinking and driving don't mix!
Given that she is critically injured, maybe you can still feel sorry for her even though she used very poor judgment. You don't even know for a fact whether the accident would have been avoided if she wasn't intoxicated.
Also, doesn't an article about someone being critically injured in a DUI accident tell us all we need to know about the unsafe nature of drunk driving? Certainly more so than "aw-shucks, drinking and driving sure is lame" posts ever could.
