PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Former Illinois forward Alexis Burke has joined the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
Scarlet Knights coach C. Vivian Stringer announced Thursday that Burke transferred to the Big East Conference school after playing the last two years for the Illini.
Burke will have two years of eligibility after sitting out next season. The 5-foot-11 forward appeared in 61 games for Illinois. She averaged 6.9 points and 2.9 rebounds this past season in 30 games. Burke also collected 12 assists, 12 blocks and 18 steals.
The Bainbridge, Ga., native had a career-high 26 points against Clemson in 20 minutes.
In men's tennis:
Illini advance at nationals. Dennis Nevolo knocked off No. 20 Marcel Thiemann of Ole Miss 6-4, 7-6 (6) to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA singles tournament for the second year in a row. The seventh-seeded Nevolo will face ninth-seeded Blaz Rola of Ohio State on Friday.
In doubles, Nevolo and Roy Kalmanovich won their opening-round match 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 against Mississippi State’s No. 25 tandem. The Illini, seeded 21st, will face top-seeded Rola and Chase Buchanan on Friday.
In track and field:
Illini runners moving on. Illinois’ Ashley Spencer won her 400-meter dash heat in 52.82 seconds at the NCAA West Preliminary Regionals on Thursday in Austin, Texas, advancing to the quarterfinals with the third-best time.
Other Illini advancing in the event were Ashley Kelly (eighth in 53.40) and Ryisha Boyd (11th in 53.97)
Illinois’ Andrew Riley and Stanley Azie had the seventh- and eighth-best qualifying times in the 100 to advance to the quarterfinals. Brandon Stryganek (18th) also is moving on in the event.
Illinois’ Latoya Griffith (sixth in 58.51) and Jesica Ejesieme (14th in 58.80) moved on to the quarterfinals of the 400 hurdles. Katie Porada was 19th in the 1,500 to move on to the quarters.
