URBANA — The Police Training Institute, which earlier this month was given a closing date of June 30, may have bought some more time.
University of Illinois trustees were expected to consider a proposal to close the institute, but on Friday administrators pulled the agenda item as they try to come up with a way to keep it open. Trustees have a regularly scheduled board meeting in Chicago next week.
"What this means is that I think we're going to keep PTI open," said Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing, who has been lobbying university administrators and state legislators to keep PTI open.
"The university understands that PTI is important to many people, and we're taking a little more time to see if there's a way to work with the state to identify enough funding to keep it open," said Urbana campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler.
