CHAMPAIGN — School board members, administrators and plenty of elementary students were on hand Tuesday to break ground on the renovations to Champaign's Westview Elementary.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of the renovation project, which will add more than 16,000 square feet to the school, including a new gym and classrooms. The school district will renovate the existing school space, as well.
The school is at 703 S. Russell St., C.
Westview students will attend school at the former Carrie Busey Elementary on Kirby Avenue next year, and Principal Barb Daly said they'll call it Westview on Kirby so no one gets confused.
Westview's renovations are expected to be finished next summer.
Today is the last day of school for Champaign students whose schools are on a traditional calendar. Those on a balanced calendar will finish school June 1.
