URBANA — An Urbana man whose relatives didn't recognize him and called police on him ended up being arrested for drug possession.
And because he was within 1,000 feet of a park, even the small amount of cocaine that Sean M. Martin allegedly possessed meant he was charged with a Class X felony.
Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Martin, 31, who listed an address in the 1000 block of East Water Street, was knocking on a door in the 800 block of East High Street on Tuesday but his relative didn't recognize him and called police to report a suspicious person.
Morgan said police found that Martin had a warrant for a city ordinance violation and because a drug-sniffing dog alerted to the presence of drugs in his car, police searched and found about 1 1/2 grams of cocaine in the vehicle.
The location was within 1,000 feet of Victory Park in the 900 block of East Green Street, police said.
If convicted, Martin faces six to 30 years in prison. He's being held in lieu of $50,000 bond and is due back in court July 31.
