CHAMPAIGN — A spokesman for the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District says a local bus company is not at fault for waste that's been discharged onto city streets.
Last week, Champaign-based Lincolnland Express was being investigated by the state EPA and the local health district, after being accused of improperly dumping waste from its buses.
But the health district's environmental health director, Jim Roberts, said an inspection last week found no evidence of any improper dumping by the bus company, and all of the company's equipment was in working order.
Inspectors did, however, find a warehouse near the dump site that had an aeration system that was full and not functioning properly, and that system was discharging waste onto the nearby street, which flowed into a storm drain.
Roberts said that warehouse is operated by Isaacs Properties and that company's owner, Larry Isaacs, has hired a private contractor to fix the problem this week.
Meanwhile, Illinois EPA spokeswoman Maggie Carson did not have any new information about its investigation into the waste dumping as of Monday morning.
Unfortunately, Lincolnland Express was held to the standard of "guilty... until proved innocent" on this issue.
