UPDATED 8:15 a.m. Friday
CHAMPAIGN — Champaign public works crews returned to the streets at 7 a.m. Friday to clean up debris from a brief summer storm that swept through the city early Thursday evening.
Stacy Rachel of the public works department said crews were out from 7 p.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday cleaning up downed limbs and other tree debris.
Damage seemed to be centered north of Windsor Road, south of Springfield Avenue, and between Prospect Avenue and Duncan Road, she said. Several residents lost power overnight. As of 8:15 a.m. Friday, Ameren's web site reported 384 Champaign County customers were still without power, most of those in Champaign.
Rachel reminds that damage to trees on private property is the responsibility of the property owner. City workers will remove debris from public right-of way but if it came off a tree on private property, they will not haul it away.
Champaign residents needing help with debris removal that's a hazard are asked to call public works at 403-4700.
