The United Way of Champaign County is looking to establish the county's first emergency family shelter.
The group is currently in discussions with other social service groups in the area, and also some local churches, to start a pilot program to take in homeless families. The churches would provide shelter for the families to start. Then if all goes well, a shelter could be built that's dedicated to serving families in need.
The United Way's director of community impact Beverly Baker said the program will also try to get those needy families back on their feet.

Baker said the United Way hopes to start housing area families in churches before temperatures drop for the winter. She said if a church is interested in taking in a family, it can call the United Way at 352-5151.

There has been a shortage for emergency shelter for families for a long time. Many times the extended family is unable or unwilling to assist with finding help. Just keeping kids in school can be difficult when you are wondering where you will sleep at night.
