URBANA — University of Illinois police arrested five men early Tuesday morning after a patrol officer saw them allegedly entering a university building while carrying burglary tools.
Evan Allison, 21, who listed an address in the 500 block of South Third Street, Champaign; William Armand, 21, who listed an address in the 100 block of East Daniel Street, Champaign; John Lenich, 23, who listed an address in the 900 block of South Second Street, Champaign; Derek Sachtlehen, 20; who listed an address in the 900 block of South Second Street, Champaign; and Chandler Womack, 24, who listed an address in Washington, Ill., all pleaded innocent on Tuesday to felony burglary and possession of burglary tools.
According to a police report, a UI foot patrol officer saw five men enter the Chemistry Annex Building, 601 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana, at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, through a window on the northwest side.
Police found the five men in a steam tunnel leading away from the building and arrested them. They were carrying several burglary tools, including bolt cutters, a pair of weightlifter’s gloves, a green rope, pliers, tin snips, a screwdriver and a pry bar.
The men also had water bottles, beer and a map of the university tunnel system, according to Champaign County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Weber.
Nothing was reported missing from the Chemistry Annex Building, according to police.
Womack asked for more time to hire an attorney. Judge Richard Klaus set his next court appearance for Sept. 5.
Klaus set the next court appearance for the other four men for Oct. 23.
