UPDATED 2:55 p.m. Monday
HOMER — Fire officials say a building in downtown Homer is a total loss after a fire early Monday morning.
Fire Chief Don Happ said fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. at the Homer Hardware building, 116 S. Main St.
"Our biggest objective was to keep the building south of the hardware store cooled down," said Happ. "We knew we couldn't save the hardware store."
Fire was coming out the roof of the hardware store building when firefighters arrived. Village Clerk Sharon Jeffers, who lives nearby, made the initial 911 call.
"We knew what was in the building and there was a lot of paints and chemicals that we needed to be aware of," said Happ.
Firefighters from Homer, Sidney, St. Joseph, Savoy, Ogden and Royal responded and got the fire extinguished but not before it gutted the building, doing an estimated $250,000 in damage.
Happ said the remainder of the building will have to be torn down.
Firefighters had the blaze extinguished by 3 a.m. but remained on the scene until 5 a.m.
No cause has been identified yet.
No injuries were reported.
