CHAMPAIGN — An Urbana man is being held at the Champaign County Jail following his arrest over the weekend for residential burglary and aggravated battery.
Darnell Johnson-Seward, 21, who listed an address in the 800 block of Fairview Avenue, Urbana, pleaded innocent on Monday to one count of residential burglary and three counts of aggravated battery.
His next court appearance has been set for Oct. 24.
According to a police report, Johnson-Seward got into an argument over money with a 22-year-old Urbana man and a 22-year-old Champaign man in a parking lot in the 1500 block of Kiler Drive about 10 p.m. Saturday. During the argument, Johnson-Seward allegedly battered the two other men with his hands.
One of the two victims was bleeding, but neither man received medical attention.
Following the argument, a 19-year-old Champaign woman was asked to bring some money to another location in Champaign.
After the woman did so, she returned to her apartment in the 1500 block of Kiler Drive at about 11:10 p.m. There she found Johnson-Seward and a second man in her apartment, with Johnson-Seward demanding the money back.
The woman told Johnson-Seward she had already turned over the money and began to call 911 when Johnson-Seward allegedly hit her in the shoulder, slapped the phone and damaged it.
While police were responding to the 911 hangup call, Johnson-Seward and the other man left the apartment, taking a cellphone and clothing.
Police found Johnson-Seward walking near Elm and Bradley and arrested him.
The woman later identified Johnson-Seward as the man who had battered her. Information wasn't available on Monday evening as to whether the woman needed medical treatment.
Police said the second man who had been in the apartment had not been identified as of Monday evening.
