A mainstay at the Champaign Police Department will be turning in her badge at the end of this week.
Holly Nearing, deputy chief for professional standards, with retire on Friday after 30 years with the department.
Police Chief Anthony Cobb said Nearing gave the department plenty of warning about her decision, and officials had been planning for it. Cobb said Lt. Jon Swenson will take over most of Nearing's duties moving forward.
He said the department was not looking to an outside person hire to fill Nearing's position.
Cobb said Jon Swenson will not hold the title of deputy chief even though he's taking over Nearing's duties. He will still be a lieutenant.
And there will now be just two deputy chiefs at the department instead of three. Cobb said that's being done as a cost-cutting measure.
