CHAMPAIGN — Wendy's is returning to the Campustown area.
Champaign-based JSM Development announced on Friday it had secured a long-term lease with Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers for space at 608 S. Sixth St., C.
Plans call for remodeling the location as a two-story restaurant, with the facility opening for business before the end of the year.
The restaurant will occupy more than 3,600 square feet on the first and second floors of the building.
The building is currently vacant. It is between Den Liquors and Busey Bank.
Mike Allegro, the owner/operator of the Wendy's franchise, WAM Holdings, will be opening his 17th Wendy's and plans to employ a full-time management team and up to 30 customer service employees.
"Our team promises to deliver a 'cut above' experience to every one of our guests," Allegro said in a written release. "We are very excited about opening in Campustown."
A previous Wendy's restaurant at the corner of Sixth and Green streets closed in the mid-1990s, according to the release.
