DANVILLE — Schools officials are hoping to acquire another parcel of land near Danville High School.
Board members on Wednesday will vote on whether to purchase a piece of property at 813 N. Hazel St. for $19,957.
The Danville school board will meet at 6:30 p.m on Wednesday at the Jackson Building, 516 N. Jackson St., Danville. A copy of the agenda is available online at http://bit.ly/RUuKuI .
The house — west of the high school's circle drive and north of three parcels that the district purchased a couple of weeks ago — currently is occupied. If the board approves the purchase, the owner has asked that the tenant be given 60 days after the sale is finalized to move.
For the last few years, the district has been buying lots on the west side of the high school campus as they have become available.
The most recent purchase was made after the board approved on Aug. 29 to pay the city of Danville $20,000 for the deed to lots at 805, 807 and 811 N. Hazel St., which have two vacant houses on them.
The city bought those lots for $30,000. The district agreed to pay the city half that price plus $5,000 toward the cost of demolishing the houses.
The district also purchased other lots at Vermilion County's delinquent tax sale last year, and Superintendent Mark Denman hopes more property might become available in an upcoming tax sale. He said there's another house on Hazel, and a very small lot on Fairchild that are privately owned.
While officials have no immediate plans for the land, Denman said the district and city hope to reconfigure and improve parking and traffic flow in front of the high school when funds are available.
"There are so many visitors who come (to the high school). It's kind of like a gateway to Danville," Denman said Friday.
