CHAMPAIGN — John Groce and the Illinois basketball coaching staff are building serious momentum in recruiting.
The next few weeks will decide whether that pays immediate dividends.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes, a 6-foot-4 combo guard from Huntington (W.Va.) Prep, will visit the UI campus on an official visit this weekend. Rathan-Mayes, who has narrowed his list to three schools, is considered one of the top prospects in the 2013 class.
Connecticut and Florida State also are on the list. Groce and assistant Dustin Ford met with Rathan-Mayes' mother in Toronto on Monday and were at Huntington Prep on Tuesday.
His scheduled visit marks a three-week recruiting surge for Groce's Illini. Demetrius Jackson, a point guard from Mishawaka (Ind.), and Kendrick Nunn, a shooting guard from Chicago Simeon, visited the Illinois campus earlier this month.
On his visit, Nunn gave an oral commitment to the Illini. In a short time, Groce's staff has made headway with several highly regarded prospects who could join Nunn at Illinois.
