CHAMPAIGN — There will be no State Farm Shootout at the Hall this year.
The annual December event, which was held at the Assembly Hall on the UI campus from 2006 to '10, was moved to Parkland last year because of an NCAA rule adopted in April 2011 prohibiting Division I institutions from hosting non-scholastic basketball events on campus if prospective student-athletes (seventh grade and older) are participating.
The Champaign County Convention & Visitors Bureau previously organized the event and that falls under the prohibition on Division I institutions hosting non-scholastic basketball events.
"We realize that the basketball community will be disappointed, and it's unfortunate the CVB is unable to continue hosting this event after so many years," said Jayne DeLuce, president & CEO of the Champaign County Convention & Visitors Bureau. "While Parkland College was a phenomenal host for the Shootout last year, we're excited about the event returning to the Assembly Hall through a new organizer."
The CVB has been in discussions with Brian Easter, Centennial's athletic director, to take on the event management role, which would allow the event to return to the Assembly Hall.
