URBANA — An Urbana High School student who allegedly had cannabis for sale at school was arrested Wednesday.
Urbana police investigator Tim McNaught said Ronez Young, 18, who listed an address in the 600 block of North Broadway Avenue, was arrested Wednesday after school deans found six packages of suspected cannabis — a total of less than 3 grams — in his backpack.
McNaught said deans had noticed a group of young men at the high school toward the end of the school day on Tuesday who were acting suspiciously. They left school early before school officials could speak with them.
On Wednesday, McNaught said school officials were watching out for the group and noticed that some arrived early but stayed outside by a parking lot.
After Young arrived, three of the men, including Young, went in school late while another two left school property. The late arrival prompted deans to search the backpacks of all the young men.
In addition to the cannabis in his backpack, McNaught said, he also found several unused plastic bags in Young’s pants pocket.
Young was taken to the Champaign County Jail where he remained Thursday. He was charged with unlawful delivery of cannabis on school grounds, a Class 4 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to one to three years in prison upon conviction.
Young’s bond was set at $1,500. His next court appearance was set for Nov. 13.
