Candidate petitions for seats on the Champaign and Urbana park district boards are now available.
Park board elections will be April 9, the same day that municipal and school board elections are held in Illinois.
In Urbana, the seats now held by park board President Michael Walker and board member Bob Stewart are up for election. Walker, a member of the board since 1983, said Friday he plans to run for another term.
Both seats are for six-year terms expiring in April 2019.
In Champaign, a four-year term now held by Alvin Griggs is up for election, as well as a six-year term held by longtime board member Newt Dodds.
To be eligible to serve as a park commissioner, candidates must be a qualified voter residing in the Champaign or Urbana Park District for at least one year before the election. Further, Illinois law requires that any person who is in arrears in the payment of a tax or other indebtedness due to the park district or who has been convicted of any infamous crime, bribery, perjury or other felony cannot serve on a park board.
Petitions now can be circulated for the filing period from Dec. 17 through Dec. 24.
Potential candidates in Urbana are encouraged to meet with Vicki Mayes, the executive director of the park district, to learn more about the duties, schedules of meetings, park facilities, programs and current projects.
Those interested in running in Champaign are urged to meet with Executive Director Bobbie Herakovich.
