A pair of losses last weekend didn't drop the Illinois volleyball team out of the latest national rankings.
The caliber of the opponents -- as well as how close the outcomes were -- likely explains why the 8-8 Illini remain in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll at No. 22. This week's rankings were released Monday afternoon.
Illinois fell only one spot in the rankings from the previous week after losing to No. 19 Ohio State and to No. 1 Penn State at Huff Hall. Both matches went five sets, with the Nittany Lions needing to fend off four match points in Set 5 to prevail 18-16.
The Illini, Penn State and Ohio State are among seven Big Ten teams in this week's Top 25. They're joined by No. 3 Nebraska, No. 10 Minnesota, No. 17 Purdue and No. 25 Michigan State.
Illinois will visit the Spartans on Saturday after traveling to Michigan -- which received votes this week -- on Wednesday.
