URBANA — The main goal for Randy Blackman’s Urbana boys’ soccer team each season is to win the Big 12 championship. If that means going unbeaten in the process, the Tigers will take it.
Behind goals from Gesi Muharremi and Jonathan Lukusa with assists from Darian Gingold and Miguel Fierro, Blackman’s Tigers defeated Bloomington 2-0 on Tuesday to clinch their third straight Big 12 title — with an undefeated conference record during the run.
“They’ve put in the work, the time and energy to be able to perform,” Blackman said. “It takes a little bit of luck, obviously, for that to occur, but they’ve made sure the luck happens their way.”
The Tigers (15-2-0, 8-0 Big 12) went 9-0 in the league in 2010 and 6-0-3 last season. They open Class 2A regional play Oct. 16 against the Hoopeston Area-Danville winner.
“It’s a wonderful feeling. It’s one of the hardest things to do in sports to sustain that kind of success for a long period of time, and that program has set the example to achieve top-level success for three years in a row,” Urbana athletic director Greg Hall said.
