BLOOMINGTON — Travys Nichols scored twice and Blue Ridge’s defense smothered Bloomington Central Catholic’s attack, boosting the Knights to a 5-0 win and a Class 1A regional title Saturday.
Goalkeeper Blaene Zeigler needed to make only one save for Blue Ridge, which clinched its second regional crown in as many years.
Monticello 2, St. Teresa 0. Luke Hanselman scored the only goal the host Sages would need in the first half and assisted on an insurance tally in the second half in a Class 1A regional title match. Goalkepper Isaac Schumacher recorded three saves in the shutout.
“It’s very, very special,” said Monticello coach Lois Cryder, who is retiring at season’s end. “We’re a young team and we’ll watch them as they grow here.”
Zach Armstrong also scored as the Sages won their third regional title in five seasons.
“The effort has always been really good for us this season. Our execution today was better,” Cryder said.
Iroquois West 3, Clifton Central 2. The Raiders won a Class 1A regional final that was decided by penalty kicks.
At Danville. The Class 1A regional final between St. Joseph-Ogden and Salt Fork/Westville was postponed due to rain until 5 p.m. Monday.
