URBANA - Two Urbana teens have been criminally charged with the holdup of a convenience store earlier this month.
Kaleb Smith, 17, and Denashio Tester, 15, were charged Friday with the Oct. 8 armed robbery of the Circle K, 1821 Philo Road, U.
Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said Smith, 17, who listed an address in the 1900 block of East Florida Avenue, was arrested Thursday morning at Urbana High School where he is a student. Tester, who listed an address in the 2000 block of Fletcher Street, was already in police custody, having been charged last week with the Oct. 9 armed robbery of the Check ‘n’ Go, 1815 Philo Road. U.
Seraphin said video surveillance from the Circle K and other sources led police to the teens.
Just after 10 p.m. on Oct. 8, two males entered the store. One of them displayed a gun to the clerk, and the pair made off with cash, cigarettes and cigars, Seraphin said.
Seraphin said eight cartons of cigarettes, with a total value of about $560, were stolen. Some of the cigarettes were recovered.
Smith is being held in lieu of $250,000 bond and was told to be back in court Nov. 13.
Tester, whose cases were automatically transferred to adult court because of the type of crime, remains in the Juvenile Detention Center in lieu of a total of $500,000 bond. He’s due back in court with his own attorney on Thursday.
If convicted of the Class X felony, the youths face a mandatory prison term of between six and 30 years.
