Here it is, the middle of October already. We've had nice sunny days but also lots of wind; seems to me we would have had enough wind now to last all winter. I guess it's good I'm not in control of the weather, right?
Today as I write this, it is Oct. 17. Thirty-nine years ago, we became firsttime parents. We named our little bundle Cynthia Lorene.
So, happy birthday, Cindy!
She is the mother of seven. They have a little girl who shares the day with her mom. Happy birthday, Regina Beth!
Regina is 8 years old, so she probably doesn't appreciate being called "little."
Ah me, time does fly! I was so young and dumb. Nothing much has changed except now I'm old!
I've got my quilt done for the school benefit in Dale. By the time this column comes out, we'll have "been there, done that."
I must say, I'm almost embarrassed to take it. If it wouldn't be for the beautiful middle block, designed by neighbor Rosella Miller, I might just discard it.
But maybe the people will focus on that and not on the awful goof-up I made.
What I can't figure out is why I didn't see it until the quilt was completely done. I had pinned the backing in the frame and just laid the quilt on top. It was that way for a couple of days. When I had it all quilted and out of the frame, those mistakes jumped out at me.
Oh well, maybe this will serve, in the literal Amish translation, to keep me from being "big-feely." In other words, to keep me humble.
Our two daughters, Rachel and Jane, and some of the granddaughters had the opportunity to go to the Covered Bridge Festival this past Saturday. I've always wanted to go but never had the chance. I keep hoping one of these days.
I forgot to ask Jane about her day. Rachel said it was fun, but ever so many people. I love one of the plaques she bought. She got it to hang in her laundry room. It says "Laundermom — Member of the Pile High Club."
Speaking of laundry, it's such a challenge on these windy days. The clothespins aren't made anymore to actually pin clothes to the line. You have to use a bunch, and still the clothes blow off the line.
That's except on a pulley line, then they just wrap around and around. At least that is what the towels did Tuesday. They wrapped around the top and bottom line so I couldn't reel it in.
It is good the one end of my line isn't fastened up so high as some people's are. I got a ladder and stood on it to catch the end of the towels and yanked. The clothespins went flying. I finally got enough towels off that way, so that with much tugging and jerking, I got the line reeled in to get the rest of the stuff off.
I was totally exhausted by the time it was done, but I was thankful that I could at least get the stuff off, even if it was a totally unconventional way. But that's me, unconventional! It felt so good to have all the clothes put away that I soon forgot about the inconvenience.
But then the storage door blows open and the dogs go in, rummaging for a snack in the trash bags.
It wouldn't be so bad if they would put the stuff back the way it was! That is on the top of the list of "to dos" as soon as my next quilt is done — to clean up the storage shed. Along with the garden, yard, dirty windows. The list goes on ...
In closing: Even back in Grandpa's time they had something to make you sleep. They called it work.
Like yeast baking? Try these really delicious dudes!
2 cups milk
1 cup oleo
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons yeast
1/4 cup water
6 egg yolks
6 cups flour
Scald 2 cups milk. Add 1 cup oleo, 1/4 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons salt. Cool to lukewarm.
Dissolve 2 tablespoons yeast in 1/4 cup water. Add to above mixture. Also add 6 egg yolks and 6 cups flour. Mix well. Let rise until double.
Roll out to 1/2 inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. Brush with melted butter. Let rise until double again.
Make an indentation in center and fill with any fruit filling, like pie filling. Let rise again then bake at 350 degrees. Can be very light in color and still be done baking.
8 tablespoons butter, melted
3 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Enough hot water to spread nicely
Add only a little bit of water at a time. It doesn't take a lot.
