CHAMPAIGN — Champaign ceramics artist Michael Schwegmann has been invited to exhibit his new line of sculpture at the Sculptural Objects, Functional Art + Design Fair (SOFA) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Navy Pier in Chicago.
The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., also recently accepted Schwegmann's work to include in the 31st annual Smithsonian Craft Show April 24-28, 2013, at the National Building Museum in Washington.
The Next Step Gallery from Ferndale, Mich., will show Schwegmann's work at SOFA, an annual event that features masterworks of contemporary and modern art and design, sculpture, functional art, nontraditional and visionary art, plus related special exhibits and a lecture series.
Now celebrating its 19th year, the international SOFA is the largest and longest continually running art fair in Chicago, attracting art and design lovers from throughout the country.
This year, it will feature nearly 70 galleries and dealers from more than 10 countries, along with special exhibits by renowned museums, universities and arts organizations.
This past year, Schwegmann also won first place at the Naperville Art League River Walk Fine Art Fair and best of show at The Woodlands Waterway Art Festival, The Woodlands, Texas. He also received awards of merit at the Laumeier Sculpture Park Art Fair, St. Louis, and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, Winter Park, Fla.
Schwegmann owns Boneyard Pottery in Champaign.
