CHAMPAIGN — An Urbana man faces charges in connection with what police say was his refusal to leave a bar in Campustown over the weekend.
Keith E. Wright Jr., 21, who gave an address in the 1300 block of North Lincoln Avenue, was charged Monday with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of attempting to disarm a police officer. His bond has been set at $50,000 and his next court date is Dec. 19.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said Wright was at the Red Lion, 211 E. Green St., at about 1 a.m. Sunday, when bar security flagged down a Champaign officer for a patron who refused to leave.
Wright had been escorted out of the bar by employees and then tried to get back in, Dunn said.
She said Wright "became physically combative and refused to leave." As police escorted him away, he pulled away from one of the officers and battered him. As officers tried to gain control of Wright, who was now on the ground, an officer reported that Wright tried to grab at his holster and gun.
Wright continued to resist and kick at the officers, and at one point began banging his head on the concrete, yelling, "I'm gonna make myself look pretty for this," according to Dunn.
Wright kicked a second officer, Dunn said, and was put into a squad car, then taken to Carle Hospital for evaluation and treatment and later transported to the county jail.
One officer was evaluated at Carle and released.
