CHAMPAIGN — October was cooler and wetter than normal, the second consecutive month of those conditions in Champaign-Urbana after an unusually warm and dry first part of 2012.
The average temperature last month was 51.6 degrees, which was 2.3 degrees below normal. The average daily high was 61.3 degrees, almost 4 degrees below the average October high.
And rainfall last month totaled 5.46 inches, which was 2.2 inches above the October normal. It was the third month in a row of rainfall greater than 5 inches.
There was at least a trace of rainfall on 14 of 31 days last month.
Precipitation for the year is now 31.32 inches, which is just 3.7 inches below normal. At one point this summer, Champaign-Urbana had a precipitation deficit of more than 10 inches.
The coldest reading for the month was 28 degrees on Oct. 8, a hard freeze that arrived about a week earlier than the average killer freeze. Although temperatures were colder than normal last month, there were only four days when readings were below 32 degrees.
The highest reading last month was 80 degrees on Oct. 4.
