URBANA — Those twinkle-toed Carle medical folks have won third place in the national Pink Glove Dance competition, and the money they won is being donated to the American Cancer Society.
Carle won $2,000, one of three prizes awarded in a contest in which hospitals, clinics and other medical providers submitted dance videos with breast cancer awareness theme.
Representatives from the sponsor, Medline Industries, came to Urbana to present the check Friday morning.
Carle was among 270 video competitors, with others including Christie Clinic and Provena United Samaritans Medical Center.
Prize winners were to donate the money to a breast cancer research charity of their choice, and Carle had originally designated its own Mills Breast Cancer Institute should its video be a top three vote-getter.
The beneficiary was switched later to the American Cancer Society because the contest rules forbid choosing a charity to which Carle had ownership ties, Carle spokesman Sean Williams said.
Lesa Brandt, cancer society staff partner, said the donation will be used to help fund breast cancer research being done in Illinois.
"We have eight great research institutions here," she said.
The cancer society has donated $4.1 million to research done at the University of Illinois over the past decade, she said.
Medline released the original Pink Glove Dance video three years ago to raise breast cancer awareness, and the original has generated more than 3 million views on You Tube.
This year's contest videos attracted more than 200,000 votes and more than 3 million views, according to Medline.
Carle's video, danced to Katy Perry's hit song "Part of Me," received 5,970 votes.
It featured about 650 employees and patients dancing on Carle's main Urbana campus. A dozen Carle employees who are also breast cancer survivors were featured.
Carle Vice President of Hospital Operations Lynne Barnes said Carle heavily used Facebook and Twitter to promote support for its video and she thanked the community for helping Carle be one of the winners.
