CAMARGO — Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that destroyed at a rural Camargo home Wednesday night.
Camargo Fire Lt. Jeff Schroeder said his department has asked the Illinois fire marshal's office to help investigate due to the extensive damage to the home.
Douglas County sheriff's Chief Deputy Pete Buckley said Linda Jayne, 56, was the only one home at 1661 E. County Road 1150 N when she smelled smoke coming from her kitchen.
When she went to check it out, she found a wall of an adjacent bathroom on fire and called 911.
Schroeder said firefighters got the call at 5:40 p.m. and responded with several other fire departments from Douglas and Champaign counties.
Schroeder said they were at the house for about seven hours.
He did not have a dollar estimate of the damage, saying the single-story residence was older.
Because of the extensive damage, Schroeder said, investigators were unable to determine where or how the fire started but did not suspect foul play.
