DEWEY – Gary E. Walker of Dewey died Monday (Dec. 10, 2012) at home. He was a week into his 75th year.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Blair-Owens Funeral Home, 102 E. Dunbar, Mahomet. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery, north of Mahomet.
Gary was born Dec. 3, 1937, in Paris, Ill. He was the son of John and Francis (Parsons) Walker. He married Shirley Green on Aug. 13, 1965, in Champaign.
His wife died on Jan. 21, 2005. He lost a brother and sister. He is survived by three sons, Doug (Jan) of Foosland, Greg (Jennifer) of Lock Haven, Pa., and Curt (Martine) of Fisher; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Vernelle (Tom) King of St. Joseph and Sandy (Bob) Brewer of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, Dean (Mary) Walker of Pennsylvania; and his special friend of several years, Norma Buchanan.
At the age of 17, Gary became the youngest federally licensed grain inspector in the nation. When he retired in 2004 after 49 years and eight months, he was one of the oldest.
Since the late 1960s, Gary was also a painter. This grew into sculpting. He showed art at local fairs, the Boneyard Art Festival and Artists Against AIDS. He won many awards and has art in all 50 states. This fall, WCIA featured him in ciLiving. He enjoyed giving tours of his property and never turned people away.
When he was not creating, he was having fun with the Champaign and Rantoul bowling communities.
