Traditional holiday music had a political twist to it on Thursday at a local Congressman's office as lawmakers in Washington continue to try and reach a deal on the fiscal cliff.
The Champaign County Health Care Consumers, along with two other state advocacy groups, organized an event outside Republican U.S. Representative Tim Johnson's office in Champaign. Carolers sang familiar tunes heard each year during the holiday season, but with special lyrics dealing with the fiscal cliff.
Health Care Consumers Executive Director Claudia Lennhoff said the group is asking Johnson to sign the discharge petition.

Meanwhile, Johnson spokesman Phil Bloomer said the Urbana Congressman is waiting for a proposal before deciding where he stands on ending the Bush-era tax cuts for those making more than $250,000 a year.

Wide-ranging tax increases and spending cuts will begin to take effect in January unless Congress is able to work out a deficit-cutting agreement to avoid them.

Getting rid of the tax cuts for the 'rich' would solve what percent of the trillions of dollars of debt the US owes? 6% a year? I don't think there is any intention of putting that new 6% annual 'revenue' towards bringing down the US debt anyway. Obama wants the debt ceiling raised to promote more of the same sort of spending that led to this magnitude of debt. Apparently it's quite easy (for some) to want to keep spending other people's money. But, 'the people' are broke and can't afford to be spending more on other people than on themselves and their families. Those who wish to can easily do so of course. There is nothing more 'for the children' than cutting spending. Think about their future and all that.
I agree...it's time for Johnson to back a cut in federal spending. We're spending way too much to get this under control.
