Illinois has signed five junior college transfers to help shore up its struggling football team.
Coach Tim Beckman said Wednesday that he added three defensive players from California schools and a pair of offensive players from Iowa to the Illinois roster. The signings include 6-foot wide receiver Martize Barr and 275-pound offensive lineman Dallas Hinkhouse from Iowa Western Community College.
Barr joins a thin receiving corps. The top target was Ryan Lankford with just 37 catches for 469 yards.
The Illini also signed 290-pound defensive tackle Abe Cajuste from Victor Valley College and 205-pound linebacker Eric Finney from College of the Canyons. Safety Zane Petty from American River College also signed.
Beckman said all of the players should help fill immediate needs after a 2-10 season.
