CHAMPAIGN — A discount grocery store plans to open next March in the former Old Navy store on Town Center Boulevard in Champaign.
Ruler Foods, which is affiliated with Kroger, has signed a lease for 20,437 square feet in the Champaign Town Center shopping center.
That shopping center, at the northeast corner of Prospect Avenue and Town Center Boulevard, has H.H. Gregg and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft among its anchor tenants.
Ruler Foods sells Kroger-branded private-label groceries and is owned by Seymour, Ind.-based JayC Food Stores, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger.
Three weeks ago, plans were announced for a Ruler Foods store in Danville. That store is slated to open next year in the former Save-A-Lot building at East Main and Griffin streets.
Ruler has opened several stores in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky during the last two years.
Kroger closed its supermarkets in the Champaign-Urbana area 30 years ago, but still has stores in Decatur, Bloomington-Normal and Paris.
Champaign Town Center is managed by Mid-America Asset Management of Oakbrook Terrace.
