Every week during the prep basketball season, IlliniHQ will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few notes from the week that was.
AUSTIN COLBERT, a senior forward/center from Gill St. Bernard's (N.J.) School, and the Knights are 1-3, even with Colbert out until January because of transfer rules. Gill beat Franklin (N.J.) High 76-49 last Tuesday night and lost 70-50 at Bridgewater-Raritan (N.J.) High School on Thursday night. Gill returns to the court this Friday against Paramus Catholic (N.J.) High School in the Msgr. Eugene B. Kelly Classic at Immaculata (N.J.) High School.
MALCOLM HILL, a senior guard/forward from Belleville East (Ill.) High School, dropped a career-high 39 points in the Lancers' 69-46 home win against Alton (Ill.) High School on Friday night. Hill and the Lancers, now 9-0, open play at the Collinsville Holiday Classic at 9 a.m. this Thursday against Riverview Gardens (Mo.) High School.
MAVERICK MORGAN, a senior center from Springboro (Ohio) High School, and the Panthers sit at 7-1 on the season after a 77-64 home win on Saturday against Carroll (Ohio) High School and a 70-61 win at West Carrollton (Ohio) High School on Friday. In the win against Carroll, Morgan led all scorers with 37 points on 17-of-21 shooting and also grabbed 15 rebounds. Against West Carrollton, Morgan led the Panthers with 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to go along with six blocks. Morgan and Springboro are back in action this Thursday against Meadowdale (Ohio) High School as part of the Domino's Holiday Tournament Springboro hosts.
KENDRICK NUNN and JAYLON TATE, senior guards from Chicago Simeon High School, and the Wolverines are 5-1 after winning three games last week. Simeon won 75-42 at home against Chicago Brooks on Friday, picked up a forfeit win against Larry Hawkins Charter School out of Chicago last Wednesday and won 75-37 at Chicago Carver on Monday. In the win against Brooks, Nunn had a huge game with 20 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while Tate added 11 points and six assists. In the win against Carver, Tate had 14 points and three steals while Nunn served a one-game suspension for removing his shoes and placing them on the court following last March's Class 4A state championship game. Simeon returns to the court this Thursday night in a first-round game against East Moline United Township (Ill.) High School at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.
MICHAEL FINKE, a junior forward from Champaign Centennial (Ill.) High School who verbally committed on Dec. 12, was held to seven points in Centennial's 48-45 win at Danville (Ill.) High School on Friday night. The Chargers (10-2) and Finke are back in action this Wednesday morning against Plainfield South (Ill.) High School in the State Farm Classic at Normal West (Ill.) High School.
CLIFF ALEXANDER, a junior center from Chicago Curie High School, helped the Condors pick up two wins last week. Alexander, who has offers from Illinois, Connecticut, DePaul, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan Michigan State, Missouri, Tennessee and Wisconsin, had 14 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and five assists in Curie's 86-35 win against Chicago Kenwood on Thursday. Prior to that, Alexander had 17 points and 14 rebounds in Curie's 77-41 win against Chicago King last Tuesday. Curie and the Condors (4-4) are back in action this Thursday against Plainfield North (Ill.) High School in a first-round game at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.
DARIUS AUSTIN, a junior forward from Cahokia (Ill.) High School, and his 8-2 Comanches were off last week. Cahokia returns to the court this Thursday against Champaign Central (Ill.) High School in a first-round game at the Centralia Holiday Tournament.
LARRY AUSTIN, JR., a junior guard from Springfield Lanphier (Ill.) High School, had 17 points, but the Lions lost 65-63 at home to Springfield Southeast (Ill.) High School on Friday night. The Lions dropped to 4-5 with the loss. Austin, who has offers from Illinois, Bradley, DePaul, Iowa, Kansas State, Memphis, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Southern Methodist and Wake Forest, and Lanphier will return to the court this Thursday morning against Bartonville Limestone (Ill.) High School at the Pekin Holiday Tournament.
TREVON BLUIETT, a junior forward from Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, scored 40 points but Park Tudor lost 73-68 at North Central (Ind.) High School on Friday night to fall to 5-1. Bluiett, who has offers from Illinois, Butler, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan, Notre Dame, Purdue and Xavier, and Park Tudor get back in action this Thursday night at Lapel (Ind.) High School.
CARLTON BRAGG, a sophomore forward from Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Ohio) High School, had 20 points in Villa Angela-St. Joseph's 77-56 win against Trinity (Ohio) High School on Friday. Bragg, who has interest from Illinois, Dayton, Indiana, Louisville, Missouri, Texas and Xavier, and the Vikings (5-2) return to action on Friday, Jan. 4, at Cleveland Central Catholic High School.
HYRON EDWARDS, a sophomore point guard from East Chicago Central (Ind.) High School, and the Cardinals lost 59-48 on Saturday to Indianapolis Broad Ripple High School in a game that saw Edwards scored 15 points and have four assists. The Cardinals lost 57-55 to Mishawaka (Ind.) High School last Tuesday night at home. Edwards, who has offers from Illinois, Indiana and Purdue, and the 2-4 Cardinals open play in the North Central Tournament this Thursday.
JAQUAN LYLE, a junior point guard from Evansville Bosse (Ind.) High School, helped the 7-1 Bulldogs win the Toyota Gibson County Teamwork Classic on Saturday night, overwhelming Mount Carmel (Ill.) High School 93-46. Lyle, who has offers from Illinois, Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas, had 18 points in the championship game win. Prior to the game against Mount Carmel, Lyle had 34 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots in Bosse's 83-63 win against Princeton (Ind.) High School on Friday night, which came after he had 39 points in Bosse's 98-60 win against North Knox (Ind.) High School on Thursday night and 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in Bosse's 73-62 win against Evansville Reitz Memorial (Ind.) High School last Wednesday night. Bosse and Lyle are back in action this Friday at home against Dayton Marshall (Ohio) High School.
CHARLES MATTHEWS, a sophomore guard from Chicago St. Rita, and the Mustangs squeaked out a 36-35 win at Loyola (Ill.) Academy on Friday night. Matthews, who has offers from Illinois, Arizona, DePaul, Providence and Southern Methodist, had 10 points and three steals, including the game-winning dunk to help the Mustangs improve to 7-2. St. Rita gets back in action this Thursday in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., against Christ Presbyterian (Tenn.) Academy.
SEAN O'MARA, a junior forward from Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill., who has offers from Illinois, Boston College, DePaul, Georgia Tech, Marquette and Virginia, among others, had 11 points in Benet's 64-55 win against Chicago Urban Prep West on Saturday in the first round of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. O'Mara and Benet (11-2) advanced to the second round of the 32-team tournament with the victory, and will play Berwyn-Cicero Morton (Ill.) High School this Friday.
JAHLIL OKAFOR, a junior center from Chicago Whitney Young, helped the Dolphins place fifth in the City of Palms Classic Tournament, held in Fort Myers, Fla., after beating Chester (Pa.) High School 67-56 on Saturday. Okafor had 13 points and five rebounds in the win, which came after Whitney Young beat Omaha (Neb.) Central behind 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists from Okafor. Whitney Young opened the tournament Thursday night with a 68-63 loss to Montverede (Fla.). Okafor, who has offers from Arkansas, DePaul, Illinois, Michigan State, North Carolina and Ohio State, among others, with interest from a multitude of Division I schools, had 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Okafor and Whitney Young (5-1) open the Beach Ball Classic this Thursday night against Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School.
TYLER ULIS, a junior point guard from Marian Catholic (Ill.) High School who has interest from Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and others, had 25 points in the Spartans' 77-56 win against Lemont on Saturday in the Crete-Monee Shootout. Ulis and Marian Catholic, now 9-1, will open play in the Big Dipper Tournament at Rich South (Ill.) High School this Wednesday afternoon against Rich Central (Ill.) High School.
D.J. WILLIAMS, a sophomore forward out of Chicago Simeon, will help the Wolverines (5-1) at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament this week. In Simeon's win against Carver, Williams had 11 points and six rebounds. Williams picked up an offer from Florida last week to add to offers from Illinois, Cal-Poly, DePaul, Nebraska and SMU.
KEVIN ZABO, a junior point guard out of Wolfeboro Brewster (N.H.) Academy, beat Rise (Pa.) Academy 103-91 last Monday night as the Bobcats improved to 9-4. Zabo has offers from Illinois, George Washington, Iowa State and West Virginia with interest from Connecticut, Marquette and Ohio State, among others. Zabo and Brewster are off until Saturday, Jan. 5.
