URBANA — A rural Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $100,000 bond following his arrest for carjacking.
Jonathan R. Morrissey, 18, 2218 County Road 1100 E, rural Champaign, pleaded innocent on Wednesday to one count of felony vehicular hijacking, one count of domestic battery and one count of violating a bail bond.
According to a police report, Morrissey was at the apartment of a 17-year-old woman he had been dating in the 300 block of West Birch Street, Champaign, on Monday morning when he asked to use her car.
When the woman said no and got into her car to drive to work, Morrissey got into the passenger seat.
When the woman arrived at her place of work in the 100 block of Convenience Center Road and reached over to take the key out of the ignition, Morrissey allegedly grabbed the woman, slammed her face into the steering wheel and grabbed the key and drove off with the car.
Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said the woman had visible bruises on the left side of her face from being slammed into the steering wheel.
After Morrissey texted the woman with: "I hope you have fun walking home," the victim reported the incident to police.
Officers found Morrissey at his home with the car and arrested him.
Judge Richard Klaus ordered Morrissey to have no contact with the victim or her address and set his next court appearance for Feb. 19.
