URBANA — An Urbana man and his new girlfriend are due back in court in February after being charged with allegedly breaking into the ex-girlfriend's apartment and stealing items last week.
Christopher Bell, 21, who listed an address in the 500 block of East Florida Avenue, and Jessica Goode, 18, who listed an address in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, Urbana, were criminally charged with residential burglary for allegedly forcing their way into an apartment in the 2000 block of Philo Road on Dec. 26 and stealing multiple items, including jewelry, a purse, DVDs, a DVD player and food.
Urbana police investigator Dave Smysor said the woman living there was able to obtain still photos from surveillance video of the exterior of the building, which she gave to police. She identified the man in the video as Bell. An acquaintance told her the woman in the video was Bell's new girlfriend.
Using that information, police obtained a search warrant for Goode's apartment, which they served on Dec. 27. Smysor said police recovered all the items stolen from the woman's apartment with the exception of the food. He said Bell and Goode made statements implicating themselves in the break-in.
If convicted of the Class 1 felony, they face a mandatory prison term of between four and 15 years.
Both were released on their own recognizance and ordered to be back in court Feb. 19.
