FARMER CITY – Betty H. Swigart, 82, of Farmer City passed away at 8:45 a.m. Monday (Dec. 31, 2012) at Farmer City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Betty was born in rural Mansfield on Sept. 18, 1930, to Robert and Iva Ruth Lanham Prater. She grew up in rural LeRoy and graduated from Empire Township High School in 1948. She was a 1951 graduate of Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing, Bloomington.
She met her husband James Carlton "J.C." Swigart through the McLean County Rural Youth organization and they were married Feb. 8, 1953, at LeRoy Christian Church. J.C. passed away on June 14, 2005.
Betty and J.C. made their home on family farms in rural Arrowsmith and Farmer City. Aside from being a devoted farming partner to J.C., she also shared her love of nursing as an RN at Jackson Heights Nursing Home in Farmer City for more than 30 years.
Betty was a member of the Weedman United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Busy Needles Hobby Club. She and J.C. were officers of the Prairie Promenadors Square Dance Club and the two of them found great joy in all of their dances together.
Surviving Betty is her sister, Shirley Prater Robbins Peters, Urbana. Two brothers, Edwin and Harlan "Bus" Prater, preceded her in death.
Also surviving are her children and their spouses, Larry and Barb Swigart of LeRoy, Amy and David Boren of Herrin, Sara and Frank Wrestler of rural Bellflower, and David and Gayle Swigart of Waterford, Wis.
She was also a "Mom" to Rudy of Austria and Alam of Indonesia through the AFS Foreign Exchange program, in which she encouraged her children to take part.
Grandchildren are Jessica Swigart, J.P. Swigart and his wife, Linsay, and their children, Miles and Julie; Joshua Boren, Danielle Boren; Caitlin McCoy and her husband, Micah, and their children, Sam and Sadie; Justin Brown, Emily Swigart and Austin Swigart.
There are six stepgrandchildren and their families: John and Jamie Wrestler and their daughter, Maia; David Wrestler and his son, Devin; Janelle and John Dodds and their children, Clint, Josh (Rebecca), Brice, Kenzie and Dawson; Ira Wrestler; Dan Wrestler; and Brian Wrestler.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Weedman United Methodist Church, rural Farmer City.
Memorials may be made to the Weedman United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or an organization of the donor's choice.
