SPRINGFIELD — Author Bruce Levine, a history professor at the University of Illinois, will discuss his book "The Fall of the House of Dixie: The Civil War and the Social Revolution that Transformed the South" on Jan. 9.
He will also sign copies of his book at the Union Theater, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, 212 N. Sixth St., Springfield. The events begin at 5:30 p.m.
Levine's book uses diaries, letters and government documents to paint a picture of Southern culture just before the Civil War and then track that culture's collapse as the war raged on and slaves won their freedom.
He will be signing books at 6:30 p.m. and speaking at 7 p.m.
(Also, Levine will take part in a "Teacher Talks" session with educators at the Presidential Library at 5:30 p.m.)
The event is free but requires reservations, which can be made by calling 558-8934.
The museum's store and exhibits will be open during the event.
