URBANA — A second man believed to be involved in a restaurant holdup in Champaign late last month has been arrested.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Champaign police found Xavier Gary, 21, who listed an address in the 200 block of Garwood Street, at his mother's home Thursday and arrested him for the Dec. 28 armed robbery of the Hardee's restaurant, 1806 W. Bradley Ave., C.
Rietz said co-defendant Larry D. Pettigrew, 23, who listed an address in the 0-100 block of East Beardsley Avenue, was arrested within minutes of the holdup which occurred about 9:40 p.m. that Friday. Citizens helped tackle Pettigrew at a gas station near the Hardee's and held him until police arrived. The second robber got away.
Pettigrew was allegedly reaching for a gun in his waistband on the ground as Officer Rich Carroll was trying to get him handcuffed.
Rietz said Pettigrew implicated Gary in the holdup and police had been looking for him since.
Gary is charged under a theory of accountability, as it's believed that Pettigrew was the man with the gun, Rietz said.
Pettigrew remains in the county jail in lieu of $200,000 bond and is due back in court March 5.
