RANTOUL – Eugene C. "Gene" Hinderer, 88, of Rantoul was taken to heaven in the arms of angels on Saturday (Jan. 12, 2013) at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Rantoul. Rev. Carol Lakota Eastin will officiate.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Lux Memorial Chapel, Rantoul, will be handling the arrangements.
Eugene was born April 22, 1924, to Rufus and Sarah (Hatten) Hinderer of Blue Mound. He was married for 36 years to Harriet Vera (Huffman) Hinderer. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Troy Hinderer of Mahomet, Robert Hinderer of Apple Valley, Calif., and Billy Hinderer of Bloomington; two daughters, Helen Walker of Hawaii and Fay (Richard) Ford of Rantoul; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Eugene was a hard worker and spent 19 years at GE before retiring; he then worked 28 years at the University of Illinois.
He bled orange and blue and was a faithful Illini women's basketball fan. He was also a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and he was able to attend a game in each stadium the Cardinals had.
He loved yard work and tinkering in his garage. Above all, he loved his family and enjoyed every moment spent with them.
