URBANA — A man from Peru, Ill., who was found passed out in a gas station bathroom from an apparent heroin overdose was sentenced Wednesday to prison.
Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis agreed to recommend that Steven T. Carls, 26, who also listed an address in Fairbury, receive drug treatment while he's imprisoned.
Carls pleaded guilty in October to possession of a controlled substance after Champaign police found him on Oct. 4 in possession of fewer than 15 grams of heroin and syringes while passed out in the restroom of the Murphy's USA, 2602 N. Prospect Ave. According to court documents, Carls admitted he had been using heroin.
Difanis sentenced him to 4 1/2 years in prison for the conviction, noting that Carls has had at least three previous stints at drug treatment. He also had prior convictions for consumption of liquor by a minor, theft, possession of a controlled substance and possession of hypodermic syringes, court records showed.
Another dreg of society.
And after 4 1/2 years in our prison system he will be an asset to society. Well done Justice!
