CHAMPAIGN – Leonard Coburn, 91, of Champaign passed away at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Leonard was born Dec. 28, 1921, in Chicago, the son of Henry and Kate (Bronstein) Coburn. He married Barbara Bitting on July 4, 1952. She passed away Jan. 14, 2003. He married Carliss (Bryson) on June 28, 2003. She survives.
Leonard is also survived by a son, David (Joyce) Coburn of Liverpool, N.Y.; a daughter, Lynn (Steve) Klemann of Winter Park, Fla.; his twin brother, Morton Coburn of Chicago; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Stepsons, Daniel Carnell of Mahomet, Kurtis (Lisa) Buckley of Champaign; stepdaughter, Christie Shafer of Monticello; and five step-grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Seymour Coburn; and his beloved dog, Frosty.
Leonard served four years in the United States Navy during World War II. He attended the University of Illinois and obtained his master's degree in Library Science. He became the head of the physics and engineering library at the University of Illinois for 32 years until his retirement in 1982.
Interment will be in Bement Township Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
