WESTVILLE — Parishioners of St. Mary's Church in Westville were invited to walk the halls of the parish's school for the last time on Sunday afternoon.
The 107-year-old Catholic grade school closed in May 2010, due to declining enrollment and financial support despite efforts by parents, parishioners and community members to keep it open.
The parish will have an indoor rummage sale on Feb. 8 and 9, and leftover items from the school, as well as some church items, will be for sale.
St. Mary's was established in 1903. It closed briefly during the Great Depression in the 1930s, then reopened toward the end of the decade. The current school was built in 1960. Enrollment peaked with 369 students in the 1966-67 school year, but continued to decline in later years.
The Rev. Timothy Sauppe and the parish council have plans for the building and land, but are waiting on approval from Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.
