Cassandra Schowengerdt, who works in The News-Gazette's marketing department, recently mentioned that she made homemade peanut butter.
Let me run that by you again - homemade peanut butter. I've made a few things from scratch [3], but nothing as mind-blowing - or as simple - as this.

Here's how to make your own. Take peanuts (Cassandra shelled three pounds of roasted peanuts from Fortino's Gourmet in Grand Haven, Mich., for hers [8]). Put them in your food processor. Process them until they're really smooth (it may take a few minutes), and then store your peanut butter in a clean jar.
There are photos and much more detailed instructions on this blog [9], called Averie Cooks. That's where Cassandra got the idea. She said she wants to try making almond butter next.
I don't know that I will make my own peanut butter - but I like knowing that I can.
