RANTOUL — A Rantoul teen is in the county jail after his arrest for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a younger teen.
Gage R. Peters, 18, who listed an address in the 300 block of Phillips Drive, was charged Wednesday with two counts of felony criminal sexual assault and two counts of misdemeanor criminal abuse.
The charges stemmed from alleged activity with a younger teen that occurred in Rantoul between June 2012 and Friday.
Rantoul Police Lt. Jeffrey Wooten said his department was contacted on Monday that Peters may have been engaging in sex acts with a younger teenage male and threatening to make public the relationship if the younger teen refused to continue in that relationship. It had reportedly been going on several months.
Peters was arrested on his way to school at Rantoul Township High School Tuesday morning, Wooten said. He cooperated with police during interviews and was taken to the county jail in the afternoon. Wooten said police seized Peters’ computer. The alleged victim was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center on Tuesday.
In court Wednesday, Judge Richard Klaus set Peters’ bond at $150,000 and told him to be back in court March 19.
If convicted of the two felony counts, Peters faces eight to 30 years in prison.
Two weeks ago, Peters appeared at a RTHS school board meeting to complain that the school administration had not acted swiftly enough to address incidents of bullying directed at him. He reported repeated instances of vandalism to his car at school that happened in late August and September, including that someone had written the word “fag” on the vehicle.
A student was disciplined for the alleged vandalism but Peters told the board he didn’t feel safe attending school.
