PESOTUM — Four men from northern Illinois were arrested late Friday night in Champaign County on drug and weapons charges.
Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Ryan Starrick said just before 10:30 p.m., a trooper stopped a sport utility vehicle that was driving south on Interstate 57, about 3 miles north of Pesotum, because it was allegedly speeding and had failed to dim its headlights.
A license check on the 2004 Trailblazer revealed that it had been reported stolen from Waukegan, according to Starrick.
A search of the SUV turned up more than an ounce of cannabis and a revolver, Starrick said.
All four occupants were arrested for possession of cannabis between 30 and 500 grams and possession of a firearm without a firearm owner’s identification card. They were identified as Jaleel Ataa, 20, of Waukegan; and Rashaan Frierson, 20, Tony Perez, 19, and Darrell Robinson, 19, all of Chicago.
The four remained in the Champaign County Jail on Saturday pending formal charging on Monday.
If I was driving in a stolen vehicle, I think I would drive defensively and follow every traffic rule to the letter.
