CHAMPAIGN — 40 North 88 West, Champaign County's Arts Council, has selected an image created by Leif Olson as the signature image for the 2013 Boneyard Arts Festival on April 11-14.
His "Rover" on acrylic made an immediate impression on the judges, who are local arts professionals. "Rover" stood out as a dynamic, eye-catching and colorful image that captured the spirit of the 11th anniversary of the festival, reads a news release from 40 North.
Olson, a 1973 graduate of California College of Arts in Oakland, moved to Champaign six years ago. To a great extent, his work deals with the individual in relation to his or her environment or with individuals in relation to each other. He is represented by Cinema Gallery in Urbana.
The judges for the Boneyard signature image were Kurt Bielema, graphic designer and owner of Single Stereo; Natalie Fiol, art director at Adam's Outdoor Advertising and membership director of the Champaign-Urbana Design Organization; Melissa Mitchell, local artist, 2012 Boneyard Signature Image creator and volunteer communications coordinator at the I.D.E.A. Store; Jimmy Luu, assistant professor at the University of Illinois School of Art + Design and coordinator of Figure One, the school's downtown Champaign exhibition space; and Jason Michael Bentley, a graphic designer at Health Alliance.
Also, the Boneyard Connect social, hosted by the Urbana Business Association, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 88 Broadway in Lincoln Square Village. The event helps connect artists with local businesses.
It will feature a complimentary buffet provided by Piato and display tables for artists to showcase their work. The event is free and open to everyone interested in presenting an exhibit, event or live performance during the Boneyard Arts Festival.
Also helping with that is the Boneyard Blog (boneyardartsfestival.wordpress.com), an interactive online tool to help artists and venues connect with one another and make plans for the Boneyard Arts Festival.
The blog features complete information on how to participate, space for artists and venues to list information and find others to work with, frequently asked questions, registration materials, news updates and more.
