CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from an elderly woman for whom she acted as a caretaker.
Champaign police Sgt. Dave Griffet said Jennifer Phillips, 27, who listed an address in the 300 block of North Edwin Street, was arrested Tuesday on a preliminary charge of financial exploitation of an elderly person.
Griffet said Phillips had been caring for a 93-year-old woman since October. On Monday, the woman's son contacted police because he discovered large amounts of money had been taken out of his mother's checking account and as an advance on a credit card.
Griffet said police investigated and found that Phillips had allegedly used the woman's credit card to gain a cash advance of about $3,000, and wrote checks to herself and cashed checks on the woman's account in the amount of about $5,000.
"She got about $8,500 spent in the last couple of months that appeared to be for her own personal use," said Griffet. "I don't believe there's any money left."
Griffet said the elderly woman's family had known Phillips for about 12 years.
