Billy Gonzales, the Illinois co-offensive coordinator in 2012, is leaving the school for another job, a source close to the program said.
Gonzales joined Tim Beckman’s staff after working two seasons at LSU as passing game coordinator and receivers coach. Before joining the Tigers, he spent five seasons as receivers coach at Florida.
The former Colorado State receiver split coordinating duties at Illinois with Chris Beatty, who was released after the season. The offense struggled during a 2-10 year.
Former Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit was hired as the new Illinois offensive coordinator.
With Gonzales leaving, Illinois has two openings on its staff. The defensive line position is also vacant and expected to be filled later in the month.
