URBANA — A 25-year-old Georgia man is in the Champaign County jail facing drug charges in connection with his arrest at the downtown Champaign transit terminal.
Kendall L. Grimball, of Decatur, Ga., was arraigned Thursday on two felony counts of delivery of cannabis near school grounds, after his arrest at the Illinois Terminal. The Champaign school district's Ready School is at the terminal.
According to a police report, Grimball was arrested at 5:38 p.m. Wednesday when a Megabus arrived at the terminal for a scheduled stop. Officers at the terminal saw Grimball stand up abruptly on the second level of the bus and go to the first level. When they checked the bus, they found a backpack in the area where he had been seated.
A police dog alerted to something in the backpack, which officers said contained about 12.7 ounces of "Kush," a high-grade cannabis.
Though Grimball initially denied the backpack was his and said he was riding on the lower level of the bus, he was arrested and eventually told police he had bought the cannabis in Texas and was bringing it to Champaign-Urbana to sell.
His bond was set at $20,000 and he was told to be back in court on March 19.
All those people who think the terminal is a good place to do a drug business should be on notice. It's part of a school grounds. That means extra time. It's on that big sign outside.
