Despite the lack of snow, precipitation this winter has been running ahead of the same pace last winter, and is 1 to 2 inches above normal in many areas. Locations from Rantoul southwest to Taylorville have had precipitation ranging from near normal up to a half inch above normal.
After last winter's exceptionally low snow totals, this winter is not much of an improvement in most areas, for those people that would like more snow. Only southeast Illinois has seen a significant jump in snow totals from last year and compared to normal, primarily due to winter storms that affected the area the last couple weeks of December. In some parts of central Illinois, this winter's snow totals have been even lower than last winter.
